FAQs
What are Sport Optimized Lenses?
Sport Optimized Lenses are prescription lenses designed by our own in-house Sports Opticians for maximizing clarity, contrast, and comfort during your activity. Like the name says, they’re made for optimizing your performance. Whether it be night driving, golf, or gaming — the right lenses are key for doing your best. Because when you see your best, you can be your best.
Sport Optimized Lenses are a SportRx exclusive. Launched in 2013, our collection has grown to 34 unique color combinations, all based on activity. Each one was formulated by a Sports Optician to address lighting and environmental challenges so you can perform like a pro. We’re the only opticians in the game who can make recommendations based on optical expertise and experience in the sport. Contact us here.
Almost every color combination works excellently for more than one activity. And though it was a bit hard to choose, we’ve narrowed our top 13 down to one sport each.

Top Prescription Lenses for Sports
Cycling — Start to Finish
It’s a winner for road cycling, but the Start to Finish lens is a go-to for pretty much any and every activity under the sun! One of our top sellers from Day 1, this lens has a rose-colored base tint that instantly wakes up grayed out terrain: roads, potholes, skies, you name it. The key feature here is enhanced contrast, which is critical for road cyclists who want to increase reaction time and sharpen focus.
Start to Finish gets its name for its wearability. If you’re the type of person who likes to wear one uber versatile pair of sunglasses from start to finish in your day, these are for you! While they are not Transition Lenses, they work for such a wide range of lighting conditions that they don’t need to be. They work for most people, in most conditions, for most sports. As Sunglass Rob says, they give you “Less stop, more pop.”
Running — Day & Night
Our second most popular Sport Optimized Lens, Day & Night is the most adaptable lens of our collection. It works well for so many activities, it was almost impossible for us to narrow it down to just one! Like the name says, Day & Night transforms in both day and night conditions with photochromic lenses that go from almost clear to a dark gray, making it ideal for running in almost any lighting condition.
There’s a reason it’s so popular. You can wear the Day & Night lens for a number of activities, from motorcycling to gaming. Going on a backpacking trip and need to rely on one lens for multiple things? This is the lens. Are you unsure about what conditions to expect and need to be ready for whatever the weather throws your way? This is the lens! Worn indoors or outdoors, as eyeglasses or sunglasses, Day & Night is like the Swiss Army knife of lenses. Except, cooler.
Lifestyle — Blackout
It’s no surprise that our next top-selling Sport Optimized Lens is another crowd pleaser for its adaptability. The Blackout lens delivers flawless brightness protection for your sunniest days. Think reflective ocean waters, a bluebird snow day, or when the sunlight beats down on wet concrete after a heavy rain. That’s when you’ll love the comfort of the Blackout lens for its soothing, generous glare protection.
The Blackout is a dark gray polarized lens that deflects glare and gives a neutral cast to your surroundings. For example, a white car will still look white, but just more shaded with no change in color. This is the right lens for those who experience light sensitivity or dry eyes, or if you simply enjoy a classic dark gray polarized lens (a lot of people do). It’s great for mountaineering, deep sea fishing, or even driving. Anywhere you wanna pull the shade on brightness, the Blackout has you covered. Literally.
MTB — Hero Dirt
It’s hard not to idolize the perfect loam soil when it’s brown pow. You’ll feel the same way about our Hero Dirt lens, which gathers its name from the tacky dirt that makes for savage riding conditions. Like its namesake, Hero Dirt delivers perfection. It gives you impeccable optics with a deep vermillion for an insane contrast boost, making it easier to see ruts, jumps, and trail features ahead. It’s a phenomenal lens for almost any riding condition, whether sunny or overcast, shaded or open. However, it really wows on a bright, open trail.
Trail conditions will vary, and the Hero Dirt keeps up. This is a Transition Lens that auto darkens from a light rose to a deep scarlet based on the sunlight, which is incredibly convenient while you’re shredding without a care. We also added a subtle tint for deflecting glare that only makes them look even more rad.
Avid mountain biker Sunglass Rob puts it simply: “It’s freakin’ amazing.”
Inshore Fishing — Freshwater Green
Anglers need two things: glare protection and contrast enhancement, and the Freshwater Green lens fits the bill on both! When you’re out on the water, polarization is a must for cutting reflective glare. However, you also want to be able to spot color, especially for inshore fishing where waters aren’t as deep. The Freshwater Green is made with a warm, amber-toned base that boosts contrast for spotting fish in marshes, murky waters, and variable light conditions. The green mirror cancels out harsh glare so your eyes can rest and relax — even in intense sunlight.
The Freshwater Green is a no-brainer for inshore fishing, but it’s also an excellent choice for any other water sport, driving, or just a day at the beach! The green mirror is a favorite for both function and fashion, so you won’t just look great — you’ll perform great.
Basketball — Fog Fighter I
Sink every one of your shots on the court with our Fog Fighter 1. This Sport Optimized Lens is made specifically for prescription sports goggles and has a transparent base with zero tint. It’s not a photochromic lens, so we recommend it for indoor sports or night games. Fogging is a top concern for athletes who wear Rx eyewear, which is why the Fog Fighter 1 is made with FogDefense™ anti-fog coating to wick away condensation and keep your view of the basket free and clear.
You can also use the Fog Fighter 1 for night games or low light conditions in other sports like baseball, football, or hunting.
Offshore Fishing — Deep See Blue
Deep waters call for ultimate glare protection, which is why the Deep See Blue is a trusted companion for offshore anglers. The dark gray polarized base shields your eyes from incessant sun glare better than any other base color. You’ll need this when you’re surrounded by blue waters, which act as a mirror even on overcast days. An inky, neutral base keeps your eyes relaxed and comfortable for hours on end.
Gray tints can wash out color, which is why we added a solid blue mirror coating to deflect harsh light and add a touch of amber-colored contrast. If your happy place is on the water and you gravitate towards the sun, Deep See Blue will keep you cool, calm, and focused on your best catch all day long.
Hiking — Day & Night Contrast
Now, take everything that’s rad about the Day & Night lens and add a burst of warm contrast. Boom — you’ve got the Day & Night Contrast lens! This lens works exactly like its predecessor, but instead of transitioning to a dark gray, the Day & Night Contrast lens goes from an almost clear, brown tint to a dark brown in direct sunlight. Hikers love this for how it rouses color in any type of environment, including partially shaded foot trails, overcast bikeways along the bay, or lush ascents in the open sunlight. It’s especially dope for any activity involving green terrain, including golf. When you amplify color details, you can sharpen your focus, improve your aim, and navigate your surroundings even better.
We listed it here for hiking, but the truth is the Day & Night Contrast performs like a boss for almost any sport or activity you’ve got. It isn’t going to feel as “shaded” as the original Day & Night, which transitions to a cooler, balanced gray. But for those who want accentuated color, especially in variable light, the Day & Night Contrast is the boost you’re looking for.
Driving — Win Win
Winners do what works, which is what we did when we created the Win Win Lens. We took a warm-colored base, polarized it, then added a soft mirror to give it color contrasting and brightness protection qualities. It’s similar to the Start to Finish Lens, except polarized for deflecting glare like a ninja. How do they compare? Whereas an athlete who enjoys a brighter picture might opt for the Start to Finish Lens, another with more sensitive eyes may prefer the polarization of the Win Win.
We can’t overstate the versatility of this lens. It suits more activities than it doesn’t, but we like it for driving because of what the winning combo of glare protection and contrast enhancement does for road conditions. It addresses blinding glare and dull concrete in one go. You’ll enjoy it just as much for a ride on your motorcycle, fishing, running, and everyday life.
Gaming — The Closer
If your greatest foes are blue light or glare, The Closer will help you prevail without a problem. These are completely transparent lenses originally designed with baseball pitchers in mind, who aren’t allowed to wear tinted eyewear but also need glare defense. We love them for gaming because of their BlueDefense™ blue light blocking coating, which shields you from eye strain even with hour upon hour of screen time. The built-in protection also includes anti-reflective coating that saves your eyes from oncoming headlights during an evening drive or stadium lights at a night game.
The Closer works best in low light conditions and is an excellent choice for any indoor activity, including basketball, racquetball or even indoor target ranges.
Football — Fog Fighter III
Where sweating and fog mix with distracting glare, the Fog Fighter 3 steps in like a conquering defensive line and keeps both at bay. These Transition Lenses change from an almost-clear gray tint to a dark gray in moments, shielding your eyes from intensifying sunlight. This is an excellent choice for football players as the Fog Fighter 3 adapts to pretty much any lighting situation you face. It’s also coated with FogDefense™ anti-fog coating to address fogging that often happens with prescription sports goggles, especially when they’re worn under a helmet.
Like most of our Sport Optimized Lenses, the Fog Fighter 3 can’t actually be boxed into a single sport, activity, or lighting condition! These lenses are your BFF during night games, indoors, outdoors, in unpredictable light or brazenly sunny days. Use the Fog Fighter 3 for basketball, motorcycling, soccer, or any sports goggle.
Baseball — Field Day
Keeping your eye on the ball has never been easier than with the Field Day Lenses, which add contrast and brightness protection to any day on the field. These start with a warm, coppery base and deepen in the sunlight to automatically adjust with the changing skies. The warm-colored base works wonderfully for baseball, making it easy to track the ball against bright blue skies and green turf with epic color contrast. We could have stopped there and these lenses would still be rad, but we also gave them hydrophobic and antistatic coatings to repel sweat and dust during a double-header.
The Field Day Lens is a fantastic choice for any outdoor activity where sunlight may be unpredictable but your color distinction needs to be on point. We also like it for golfing, hiking, or even running.
Golf — Birdie
Heightened color contrast and subtle glare defense come together to make the Birdie a game-changer on the golf course. This lens starts with a rose copper base that picks up every detail of the green, so you can read the fairway with razor-sharp accuracy. Heightened color views will help you keep your ball out of deep rough, forecast your shot, and easily spot your ball against any background. It has a subtle mirror coating to diffuse glare, and performs best in lower light conditions where you’re working against dullness from tree or cloud cover. The Birdie does the work for you, highlighting definition where you need it the most.
If you like a full, vivid picture and don’t need a ton of shade in your lens, you’ll love the Birdie.

Which lenses are clear?
Non-transition lenses that are completely clear include the Fog Fighter I, Screen Saver, and The Closer. Transitioning lenses that start clear or virtually clear are Day & Night, Day & Night Contrast, and Fog Fighter II & III.
Which lenses have an anti-fog coating?
A few of our Sport Optimized Lenses include an anti-fog coating and they are aptly named! They are: Fog Fighter I, II, & III.
Are these Transition Lenses?
Yes! Many of our Sport Optimized Lenses darken in the sunlight. If you're looking for lenses that transition, check those made for variable light conditions. These include Day & Night, Day & Night Contrast, Hero Dirt, Fog Fighter III, and Field Day from our list here.
Will these work indoors?
Certain lens options work great indoors! Check out our Sport Optimized Lenses with clear bases, or those that transition from a tinted clear to a deeper shade.
What is the VLT (Visible Light Transmission)%?
Since many of our lenses transition from light to darker in the sunlight, the VLT will also vary. Other factors that can impact the VLT include the prescription strength and lens material. When you see a VLT on another lens, they are typically referring to a plano (non-prescription) lens.
Are any of these Cat. 4 lenses?
Three of our Sport Optimized Lenses are Cat 4: Altitude, Altitude II, and Blackout.
Will the lenses I ordered look like those in the frame on the product page?
Most likely not! Many of our product pages show images of frames with non-prescription lenses. Our Sport Optimized Lenses are all made with unique color combinations and coatings that are described and shown in the lens configurator when you order. Images for our top 13 most popular ones appear in this blog.
Are these branded lenses?
All of our Sport Optimized Lenses are SportRx brand. They have been formulated by our licensed Sports Opticians based on years of experience and passion for their sports and activities.
Are these lenses scratch proof?
They are scratch resistant, and there is a difference! Unfortunately, there is no such thing as scratch proof. However, each Sport Optimized Lens is made with a solid hard coat and includes a minimum one-year scratch warranty. Even glass lenses, which are the pinnacle of scratch-resistance, can still be scratched. Bummer!
Why are these so expensive?
A lot goes into each lens. Each one has been carefully designed by a Sports Optician to address the challenges of each activity so you can do your absolute best. They are all prescription, made-to-order for your specific frame, and only include premium features. The more features your lens has, the more premium the price!
Do Sport Optimized Lenses have a warranty?
They do! For starters, every order at SportRx is covered by our See Better Guarantee™, which allows you to try your new lenses out for 45 days without any strings attached. If you’re not totally satisfied, we’ll replace them or refund your order in full — no questions asked!
Our Sport Optimized Lenses also have a 1-year scratch warranty that covers a single lens replacement due to scratches. A select few Sport Optimized Lenses include a 2-year scratch warranty. They are:
- A.C.E., Bullseye, Day & Night, Day & Night Contrast, Dirt Bag, Field Day, Hunter, Over It, Road Trip, Screen Saver, and The Closer.
We’ll just need the frame and lens in-hand to process the replacement.
